Story Time: Chapter 1

I have wanted to share some stories where you guys can get to know me a little more. Take a little glimpse into my life of “things I’ve learned”. I do write a lot of blog posts pertaining to things I’ve dealt with but never shared an actually story. This is a real story with fictitious names. Well here you go…

My freshman year in college I met a girl named Sasha. She was very nice, quiet, shy and to herself mostly. She was also one of those girls that wanted to fit in, instead of being her own person. You could tell she didn’t know herself, like many of us didn’t back then. I met her through two of my friends named Destiny and Diana, and that’s how she and I became fairly close. Destiny was roommates with Sasha but you could tell Destiny didn’t really like Sasha. As time went on Destiny and Diana would make jokes and kind of pick on Sasha knowing that she wouldn’t respond or have a comeback. They could see she was a follower and just wanted to fit in. Being friends with all three of them was hard because I was always stuck in the middle. Sasha would come to me to vent and say she felt like they were always talking about her and that she felt alone, that I was her only friend. I could tell it bothered and depressed her. It would put me in a weird position because I would tell Destiny and Diana what they were doing was wrong and if they feel a way about her then they shouldn’t socialize with her.

It became frustrating. I was either standing up for Sasha to a point where I got tired of it and told her she needed to stand up for herself and have a backbone or I was telling Destiny and Diana they needed to check themselves on how they treated Sasha. I could relate to Sasha’s feeling of isolation and depression and wanted to empower her to move away from that by taking control of what was making her feel that way. I told her this and found myself confronted by Destiny and Diana. Sasha in her attempt to stand up for herself told them that I understood her and saw how they treated her. I told Destiny and Diana that my advice to Sasha was that she let them know how she felt about their jokes, taunts and insults at her expense. After all was said and done, we moved on from this situation and I think they stared to understand where Sasha was coming from. I feel that if someone is in a position like mine they should not sit on the fence but voice what is right in the situation.
